Sewell, NJ - The RVCC Women's Volleyball team traveled to Gloucester county on Saturday to take on the host Roadrunners before facing the Skylanders from Sussex County Community College. In the first matchup of the day the Lions found themselves down 6-1 against the Roadrunners in the first set. However, a strong service run by Courtney Bordonaro helped the Lions to even the score. After that point it seemed like the Lions had total control of the match until the third set. Facing the chance of a fourth set, with the Lions down 24-20, Avalyn Stayskal stepped to the service line and gave the Lions a 25-24 lead. Emma Kovacs finished the set off 27-25 with one of her 3 service aces of the day. Kovacs once again led the Lions in kills with 8, and in assists, as she registered 12 for the second game in a row. Ra-Yanah Brown-Smith was a force at the net as she collected a season high 6 kills and 2 block assists against the Roadrunners. Stayskal controlled the defensive end for the Lions with 9 digs on the day.
A half hour after the first game the Lions took on the Skylanders from Sussex County Community College. The Lions had 31 service aces against the Skylanders, led by Kovacs' 9. Nyah Hermann led the offense with 7 kills.
The Lions are now 3-4 on the season and 2-0 in Region XIX play. They will travel to face the Montgomery Mustangs on Wednesday September 10th at 6 PM in a rematch of last season's Region XIX Championship game. The Lions beat the Mustangs 3-1 in that game to earn their 4th National Championship Tournament appearance.
