Lions Get Their First Win In 2026
Penns Grove, NJ - It took over 40 calendar days. It lasted throughout two semesters. But, on the final day, of the first month, of the new year, the RVCC Women's Basketball team got their first win of 2026 and the first since Dec, 11th 2025. The Lions traveled to Salem County and beat the Mighty Oaks by a convincing final score of 72-35. The win snapped a 9 game losing streak for the Lions and improves their record to 7-14 overall and 3-7 in Region XIX play.
The 9 game losing streak was a combination of a lot of unfortunate things for the Lions. First, they were clearly not playing well on some days. And second, on days when they were playing well they were facing Nationally ranked opponents or Division I teams. But today, the Lions finally had everything working for them from the beginning. The Lions came out of the gate with a 9-2 run in the first three minutes prompting the Oaks to use their first time out. After outscoring the home team 20-8 in the first stanza the Lions would take a 16 point lead into halftime. The game never got any closer than 15 points as the Lions poured it on in the final frame.
Maria Eguizabal Ruales led the team with 27 points and a team high 5 made three pointers. Sophomore Elizabeth May was on a mission this afternoon and contributed to the game in every single facet. She was second in points with 21, her season high, and tied for the team lead with 11 rebounds and finished first with 6 assists. This was May's first double double of her career. Aviva Palms also recorded a double double off the bench with 11 points and 11 boards. Palms has been a force for the Lions as a 6th man this season.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday night as they host the Falcons from Lackawanna College at 5 PM.
