Men's Soccer Captures Second Straight Region XIX Title
Toms River, NJ - The Raritan Valley Lions took on Ocean CC in the Men's Division III Regional Final, making it the fourth appearance at the Lions have earned at a final in as many years. RVCC put on early pressure, coming up with some big chances but couldn't convert to take the lead. This would haunt them as Ocean scored against the run of play with ruthless efficiency in their first attack. What followed was liken to a basketball game as RV rushed up the field and responded with a goal 48 seconds later, which Ocean responded to with another goal of their own, to which RV replied with another 35 seconds after. The back and forth volleys started and by the end of the first half RV was leading 4-3. The players took the initiative at half time, reminding each other what they'd come for, what was on the line. Captains Derek Jimenez, fresh from scoring two game-tying goals in the first half, and Brody Belmonte took the reigns, demanding more from their team, from their brothers on the pitch. The team responded. Reinvigorated, the Raritan Lions took the field in the second half and kept Ocean CC at bay, and with every attack Ocean threw at RV, RV replied to with calm, free flowing counter-attacks. "I haven't seen professional teams play that well" A referee was quoted as saying when the dust had settled and RV walked off the field winning the final 5-3. It was a brilliant performance, one filled with fluidity, understanding and composure showing just how ready RVCC Men's Soccer was for the next challenge. RV held the Trophy, Region Champions for the 3rd time in 4 years. But this was only the first trophy on offer, and RV Men's Soccer has it's sights set on the next one, the National Championship. The Raritan Valley Lions are set to compete in the DIII Men's Soccer National Tournament, Nov. 11-16th held at Herkimer College. They will be amongst the best 8 teams in the country, all of whom have lifted their own region's trophies. RVCC will be ready.
