Opdyke and Brown Lead Charge for Lions over Monroe
Branchburg, NJ - Freshmen Brie Opdyke and Le'Ana Brown turned in huge performances to help the Lions topple the Monroe College-Bronx Express. Opdyke, a Freshman from Belvidere High School, grabbed a season high 17 rebounds to go along with her team high 23 points on the night. Brown, a Freshman guard from Mater Dei High School, had a career high 22 points on 7 of 8 shooting including a blistering 6 for 7 from downtown.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead only to see the Express come back in the second quarter to tie the game at 25 a piece going into the break. The Lions came out of the gate strong as Brown hit 3 of her 5 second half threes in the third quarter. Although the Lions outscored the Express 27 to 11 in the third quarter, Monroe was able to cut the lead to 8 points halfway through the final period. After a strong comeback effort by the Express, Brown drilled her final three of the game while also drawing the foul. She would knock down the free throw to convert the four point play. Fellow Freshmen Micaela Etlinger and Judith Girones Gonzalez each contributed 12 points on the night. Two nights after the team hit a season high 8 three pointers, they topped it against Monroe by knocking down 9 of 18 for a staggering 50%. Brown had 6, Etlinger canned 2, and Girones Gonzalez hit one.
The Lions' Saturday Region XIX Game against Mercer County College has been postponed due to the snow storm. The team returns to action on Feb 1st as they host the Falcons from Lackawanna College. The Lions currently sit at 9-11 on the season and dropped their first contest to Lackawanna 56-58.
